GET IT NOWIf you can’t tell by my logo, I love avocados! It’s one of the reasons why Mexican recipes are some of my favorites to create. If you’re an avocado lover like me, my avocado salsa is for you. It makes the perfect appetizer with baked tortilla chips, or topping for tacos, fish, and more. It’s so simple, but it’ll make a big difference in your meals. Make my avocado salsa recipe with me for a splash of creamy, fresh flavor!
Why You Need My Avocado Salsa Recipe

- Fresh, zesty, and spicy – It’s the best of both worlds: guacamole meets fresh salsa, with a bit of heat from the jalapeno.
- Chunky texture – Unlike my avocado salsa verde, which is smooth and creamy, this avocado salsa is all about that chunky, fresh texture. It’s perfect for dipping or topping your favorite Mexican dishes, grilled recipes, and even salads.
- So easy to make – You only need 6 fresh, simple ingredients (plus salt), and it comes together in just 10 minutes. Easy, breezy!

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for my avocado salsa recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
- Ripe Avocados – Go for ones that feel firm but give a little when you press them. Think soft, but not too soft.
- Tomatoes – I used diced Roma tomatoes, but you can use any tomatoes you have on hand. For a tart, citrusy twist, you could even swap in tomatillos!
- Onion – I chose red onion for its mild flavor and vibrant color. You can use white onion or yellow onion if that’s what you’ve got.
- Fresh Cilantro – The salsa classic! If you’re not a fan, you can swap it for parsley or even sliced green onions.
- Jalapeno Pepper – I remove the jalapeño seeds so it’s not too spicy for my kids, but you can leave them in if you like more heat.
- Garlic – Although totally optional, I think adding a clove (or 1/2 teaspoon of jarred minced garlic for a shortcut) takes this avocado salsa up a notch.
- Lime Juice – For tang and to slow down the avocados’ browning. You can use bottled lime juice for convenience if you like.
- Sea Salt

How To Make Avocado Salsa
- Dice the avocado, tomatoes, and red onions. I cut the avocados and tomatoes to about the same size, and the onions a bit smaller.
- Mince the garlic, jalapenos, and cilantro. These ingredients are best chopped extra fine, so you get a little in each bite.
- Throw it all together. Mix it all in a large bowl, along with lime juice and salt.

My Recipe Tips
- Adjust the ratio to your liking. I like a lot of avocados in my avocado salsa, but if you want an even mix of avocado and tomatoes, reduce the avocado to 3 cups and increase the tomatoes to 3 cups.
- You can adjust the texture, too. This salsa has a very chunky texture, and I love it like this with big tortilla chips. But if you’re serving it as a topping or have smaller chips, you can dice everything finer.
- Mix very gently, especially if your avocados are very soft. I use avocados that are still slightly firm, so that they don’t get mushy and fall apart.
- Prefer a blended salsa? You can easily blend the ingredients together in a food processor or powerful blender, instead of mixing diced pieces.
Storage & Meal Prep
Sorry, avocado salsa doesn’t store well and is best enjoyed fresh. The avocado will brown within a few hours.
However, you can meal prep by mixing all the other ingredients without the avocado, up to 1-2 days ahead. Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge, and just add the avocado right before serving.

Serving Ideas
There are so many ways to enjoy this avocado salsa! Here are some of my favorites:
- Chips & Crackers – I grabbed store-bought tortilla chips for convenience this time, but love this salsa even more with my baked tortilla chips. You could also use your favorite crackers (I like flaxseed crackers).
- Tacos – I used my last batch of avocado salsa to whip up a taco salad, but you can also wrap taco meat in tortillas. It also makes an amazing topping for my taco casserole, taco dip, or even zucchini taco boats.
- Nachos – Top your favorite chips with my pulled pork or barbacoa, along with shredded cheese. Bake to melt, then finish with a dollop of avocado salsa and some fresh lettuce.
- Fajitas – Pile this salsa on one of my fajita recipes: chicken fajitas, shrimp fajitas, or even steak fajitas. It adds the perfect burst of flavor!
- Grilled Dishes – This is the perfect topping for my carne asada or grilled salmon.
- Eggs – I love adding it to a fluffy omelette, but you can’t go wrong with a spoonful over my cloud eggs.

Avocado Salsa

Gratitude Moment
You’ve probably seen those memes about avocados that are like, “Not yet, not yet, not yet… too late!” It’s so true. And it makes me so sad because I love avocados so much.
So, one little tool I’ve been really grateful for over the years is my avocado saver. I’ve tried a few different kinds, and this one has worked the best for keeping an extra avocado half from browning. (I intentionally used whole avocados for my avocado salsa recipe to avoid this situation, but somehow this is still the permanent state in my fridge… lol.)
Do you have other tricks you use to stretch how long avocados last? I’ll take them all! Let me know in the comments below.

0I also tried it on top of tacos and mixed it into a breakfast omelette—both were fantastic.

0Hi Maya, The avocado salsa looks and sounds delicious. How long will be keep?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Victoria, Avocado salsa is best enjoyed fresh, as the avocado will brown within a few hours. You could mix the other ingredients a couple days in advance, though.
