Free Printable: Low Carb & Keto Food List
Get It NowBack in my college days when I pretty much survived on packaged frozen meals, fish sticks were a go-to meal. When I went low carb, I didn’t have them for years, but recently I had a craving – and was delighted to find how much better a homemade keto fish batter turns out. Way better than the packaged, processed stuff. If you’re a fan of fried seafood, you’ll love these crispy low carb keto fried fish sticks!
This keto fried fish recipe uses a similar breading to my keto fried chicken or mozzarella sticks, featuring pork rinds to keep it super crunchy, but the flavor is different. Lemon pepper seasoning and paprika is the perfect flavor combo for a keto fish batter, don’t you think?
Try this low carb fried fish when you’re in the mood for a fish fry or your pub favorites. Serve with keto tartar sauce and keto coleslaw for a classic meal.
Before we batter the fish in pork rinds, we coat the fish in Wholesome Yum Coconut Flour, which helps the breading stick and makes it nice and crispy. It’s my go-to for dredging before dipping in egg in almost all my fried recipes, because the fine texture resembles wheat flour and the egg adheres to it so well. Try it out in my other coconut flour recipes!

Ingredients You’ll Need
The ingredients for this low carb fish batter recipe are quite basic and you probably already have them stocked in your keto kitchen. The breading process needs just 5 ingredients:
- Coconut flour – Used for dredging to help the breading stick. Get this one for best results. Different brands measure and absorb moisture differently.
- Eggs – Any kind will do, I used organic large eggs.
- Pork Rinds – You can make homemade pork rinds or buy them. Either way, once you crush them up, this is the keto equivalent of breadcrumbs. I like this brand because it’s light and airy, not hard.
- Lemon pepper seasoning – I used homemade lemon pepper seasoning since I had it on hand, but you can also use pre-made like this.
- Paprika – A must for flavor!
You’ll also need fish, of course (I recommend a flaky fish, such as cod or catfish) and oil to fry it in (use one with a high smoke point, I recommend avocado oil). I prefer wild-caught fish and get it delivered from here.

How To Make Keto Fried Fish
This low carb fried fish sure looks impressive, but it’s easy to make! The process is similar to breading keto chicken tenders. Here’s how to make it in just 3 simple steps:
- Cut. Slice the fish into 1-inch wide by 3-inch long strips. Pat dry with paper towels.

- Prep. Set up bowls for breading station: coconut flour in the first, whisked eggs in the second, pork rinds, lemon pepper seasoning, and paprika in the third.

- Dredge. Dredge the fish in coconut flour, then dip into egg wash, then in pork rind mixture, gently pressing “breading” into fish.

Place coated cod onto a cutting board and repeat with the remaining fish pieces.

- Fry. Heat oil in a large skillet. Add fish sticks in a single layer and fry until golden brown.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are frozen fish sticks keto? Most frozen fish sticks will not be considered keto, as they are breaded with white flour or breadcrumbs. This recipe uses a carb-free breading for fish, which makes it keto approved.
- Can I have fried fish on keto? Is fried fish keto? Up until now… no, you probably couldn’t have fried fish on keto. But this recipe makes fried fish on keto possible! We’ve used a breading made out of pork rinds to get all the crunch without the carbs. Each serving has just 1.1 grams net carbs.
- Can I use a different type of fish? Sure! I used wild caught cod, but any flaky white fish will do. Try catfish, hake, pollock, or haddock for other options.

Serving Ideas
This keto fish fry meal just needs a few sides:
- Keto Coleslaw – A light and crunchy side to the fish and a must for a classic fish fry meal.
- Keto French Fries – These sneaky fries taste like the real thing, but guess what veggie they are made with!
- Keto Tartar Sauce – You can’t have keto fish sticks without the tartar sauce!
- Sugar-Free Ketchup – Every fry needs a swipe in ketchup. This one has all of the flavor, without the carbs.
My Tools For This Recipe
- Nonstick Skillet – This large skillet is perfect for pan-frying just about anything, low carb fried fish included.
- Bowl Set – I use this glass bowl set every day! It has all of the sizes you’ll need for prep and mixing.

0Don’t know why I waited so long to try this recipe, I’m still a kid at heart and love fish sticks. These were delicious!! So easy and flavorful, cooked up light and crispy. Thought the pork panko might be overwhelming but it wasn’t, tasted just like seasoned breadcrumbs. Will be making this one regularly.
Wholesome Yum D
0That’s awesome to hear, Jill! Sounds like this recipe has earned a permanent spot on your rotation!

0Oooo eeeee!! This dish came out GREAT! We used hot and spicy chicharones and it lends itself wonderfully to a great crunch. I also made matchstick fries tossed in garlic and rosemary and some peas. (Not mushy, sorry UK!😂) I wish I was able to post a photo here because it really looked beautiful too.
Wholesome Yum D
0That makes me so happy, Jen! Your whole plate sounds delicious, and I’m loving the spicy chicharones twist.

0These are the BEST. I used mahi instead of cod because it’s what I had on hand…this will be on a weekly rotation for our family. SO GOOD.
Wholesome Yum D
0I’m so happy to hear that, Kim! Mahi sounds like a delicious choice. So glad your family loved it!

0HEY! One of the best low carb dinners! I was thrilled with how easy it was to prepare. I made the cod really crispy and loved the hint of lemon pepper. I served it with keto coleslaw and fries.
Mel

0Why is fish so much tastier when it’s fried & coated?! Love this recipe & using the pork rinds is a great idea!! They are crisp & loaded with flavor!
Jane R
0WOW!! Even my picky kids loved this!! Such a huge win, thank you!
Cathy B
0I made tilapia fried fish filets using this recipe, and they were delicious! I’m on keto as my husband is diabetic, so another win/win dinner recipe. We love fried fish, can’t beat the price of making it at home with this recipe. Thank you for a wonderful dinner!
Tom
0Great recipe! Second time making this one, I added a little old bay to the breading mixture this time and it was a good decision for me 🙂
Bobbi
0This is BREADED fish, not battered. Breaded is when you roll the meat or fish in a dry coating, such as bread crumbs or pork rinds. Battered is when you dredge the meat or fish in a thick liquid that becomes a solid crust when deep fried or fried in oil.
Teresa Smith
0Used this recipe on pompano and triple tail. Absolutely perfect crunch. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Waleska
0Hi!! Can I freeze them right after “breading” them, or do I have to make them fresh every time? Thanks in advance.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Waleska, Yes, you bread the fish sticks as directed, but do not fry. You can find the full instructions in the post.
Lynniepooh2
0I will be getting fish in my diet this week! Gosh these sticks are good
Jayne
0I just made this for dinner tonight. always a hit. I love that I can make breaded fish Keto. I bread chicken tenders with this same coating. When I first started Keto I used Almond flour and the batter always fell off. I started to use coconut flour more in baking also. It really makes everything better.
Darlene L
0I also wanted to use Almond flour instead of Coconut four, but in your reply to this post you stated it wasn’t interchangeable and it could not be used but you suggested to use it when replying to Mary a few comments later. Is it possible to use Almond flour?
Thanks
Darlene
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Darlene, Almond flour cannot replace coconut flour, but it could replace pork rinds.
Melissa
0Can you substitute almond flour for coconut flour?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Melissa, No, almond flour and coconut flour are not interchangeable, sorry.
Dana
0I have an egg allergy. Are there any substitutions that could replace the egg? I typically use flax eggs, or gelatin. Would either of these work?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Dana, You might be able replace the egg in the egg wash with heavy whipping cream or flax eggs, but I haven’t tried either to confirm.
Joyce Venables
0LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe. We had some fresh Alaskan cod which we had delivered and used this coating on it. It was delicious.
Dennis
0Why are my pork rinds not sticking to fish and fish sticks come out mushy?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Dennis, Did you make sure your fish was patted dry before adding the coating? Also, make sure your pork rinds are very finely crushed like real breadcrumbs.
Kimberly Eiles
0Can you use egg whites instead of whole eggs?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Kimberly, I have not tested this, but it should work with egg whites only. Enjoy!
Mary
0What can I use instead of pork rinds?
Thank you
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Mary, Almond flour can be used in place of pork rinds. Your fish sticks won’t get as crispy, but they will work well with almond flour.
Josephine
0What oil can you use instead of avocado oil? I can’t have avocado.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Josephine, Coconut oil will work in place of avocado oil. Best wishes!
Michelle
0Is there a substitute for pork rinds as I absolutely do not like the taste of them?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Michelle, Almond flour will give you a similar result, but it won’t make your fish sticks as crispy.
Ann Morgan
0Can these be air fried?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Ann, I have not tried making these in an air fryer, but it should work fine. Please let us know how they turn out if you decide to try it!
Jayne
0I air fry them all the time. 400 for 10 minutes. I don’t have the bucket air fryer. Mine is like a toaster oven and I use a mesh like pan to air fry. They turn out perfect every time.
Kristyn
0Absolutely love this recipe!! I love cod & frying it with a yummy, crunchy coating takes it to a whole new level!
Natalie
0Love all the yummy keto friendly meals I am finding! These were so crisp & delicious! My kids loved them!
Amy Huntley
0ooohhh…I love a good Keto Recipe and this looks delicious!

0This was excellent. It came out better than expected. I’ll be trying this method on other proteins. Thanks a bunch!
Erin C.
0Using pork rinds for the breading is genius! These turned out super crispy and so flavorful!
Cynthia
0What would you do for the pork rinds? I do not eat pork.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Cynthia, Feel free to use almond flour in place of the pork rinds.
