Get It NowThe Trick I Use To Make the Creamiest Keto Smoothie

I’ve made a lot of smoothies over the years, but most fruity ones don’t work on a keto way of eating because they’re loaded with sugar. I created this keto smoothie to fit my low carb lifestyle at the time, and I still make it often today. I think I always will, no matter how I’m eating. Here’s why:
- Sweet and fruity – Strawberries are one of only a few keto fruits, and this keto smoothie recipe lets them shine. It tastes like a classic strawberry smoothie.
- Thick and creamy texture – My (super simple) secret ingredient makes this smoothie rich, smooth, and thick… it’s avocado! And I promise, you can’t even taste it.
- Very keto friendly – At less than 6 grams net carbs, only 102 calories, and almost 5 grams of fiber per serving, this low carb smoothie is incredibly easy to fit into your macros.
- 4 clean ingredients – I always feel good about sipping this. It’s also dairy-free, gluten-free, and sugar-free. And it only takes a couple minutes to make.
This is probably my favorite of all the keto smoothies I’ve made — and that would be many. Make it with me for a satisfying breakfast or snack!

“This recipe is amazing! Who knew the power of an avocado? And there’s no weird aftertaste from the sweetener! 😛”

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for my keto smoothie recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
Basic Keto Smoothie Ingredients:
- Fruit – I use frozen strawberries to to make the smoothie cold and thick without needing ice cubes. They also happen to be one of the lowest carb fruits on my keto food list. Feel free to use blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries, but you’ll probably need more sweetener. I don’t recommend other fruits, as they’ll be too high in sugar for keto.
- Besti – I use Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blend because it dissolves easily and never gets gritty… plus it tastes just like sugar. My Wholesome Yum Keto Simple Syrup works well too, if you want a liquid option. Most other sweeteners (including other brands of monk fruit and stevia) contain erythritol as a filler, which settles at the bottom and can crystallize.
- Avocado – You won’t taste it at all, but it’s my trick for making the smoothie extra thick, creamy, and packed with healthy fats! I’ve even used frozen avocado here.
- Keto Friendly Milk – Regular milk is too high in carbs, so I use unsweetened almond milk to thin out my keto smoothie. You can also use coconut milk, hemp milk, or even mix heavy cream with water.

Optional Add-Ins:
You can totally keep this keto smoothie recipe simple, but if you want to boost the nutrition or switch up the flavor, here are a few add-ins I like:
- Yogurt – Creates a creamier texture. Be sure your yogurt is unsweetened; I recommend using full-fat Greek yogurt or this keto yogurt recipe.
- Protein – A scoop of unsweetened collagen, whey protein powder, or even a spoonful of nut butter (peanut butter or almond butter) can make this low carb smoothie more satisfying. If you add nut butter or nuts, you might need a splash more milk to thin it out. You might also like my protein smoothie recipe if you want a bigger protein boost.
- Vanilla Extract – If you’re not using vanilla almond milk, a splash of extract adds subtle sweetness and depth.
- Chocolate – A few tablespoons of cocoa powder will cover up the strawberry flavor and makes this creamy smoothie taste like a chocolaty treat.
- Veggies – Try a handful of spinach, kale, or even sliced cucumber. I add a little at a time and taste in between, to ensure I don’t start to taste the greens.
- MCT Oil – This oil helps support ketosis and keeps you full longer (source). I only add up to a tablespoon per serving, otherwise it can upset my stomach.

My Recipe Tips
- To keep your smoothie cold for longer, freeze your glass for 10 minutes. This is especially refreshing on a hot day.
- Don’t have frozen berries? When I don’t want to wait for them to freeze, I just toss in a few ice cubes with the fresh berries to get that frosty texture.
- Use a high-power blender if you can. If yours is less powerful, you might need more milk and won’t be able to get quite as thick of a smoothie. You can also use fresh strawberries if your blender is too weak to handle frozen.
- Adjust Besti to your taste at the end. The amount you need can vary depending on how sweet your berries are and how sweet you want your keto smoothie.
- The color of this smoothie depends your berries and avocado. This sounds obvious, but I’ve had some people ask me why their keto smoothie isn’t as bright pink as mine. I get the color shown here when my berries are super red and my avocado is more yellow-ish. Paler red strawberries or a greener avocado makes the smoothie less bright, but still just as delicious!
- Want it a little fancy? Garnish your drink with a fresh strawberry, a swirl of sugar-free whipped cream, and a colorful straw (I like these fun ones that are also biodegradable).

- Tips: Check out my recipe tips above to help you with get the best texture, color, and sweetness.
- Storage: This keto smoothie looks best fresh, since it gets thinner when the berries thaw and the avocado starts to make it yellow-ish with time. However, you can store it for up to 1-2 days in the fridge if you need to. Blend again before enjoying.

2DELICIOUS!!!! I only had frozen organic blueberries and I halved the recipe adding just a bit more almond milk, 1 tbs peanut butter and my powdered collagen. Very very good!!! May be my go to breakfast from now on.
Trish
1Hi can you use agave syrup for sweetener in the smoothies?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
1Hi Trish, Yes, you can, but that’s not a keto sweetener.
Sally Earnest
1This recipe is amazing! Who knew the power of an avocado! And, there is no bad aftertaste with the sweetener! 😛
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Sally!
Jodi Rusignola
1Can you replace the frozen strawberries with fresh strawberries and ice? If so what amounts?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
1Hi Jodi, Yes, you can use fresh strawberries, but I probably wouldn’t add any ice. The smoothie will be a little bit thinner, but still delicious. You could add a small amount of ice at the end if you really want to, but overall I think it would just dilute the smoothie’s flavor.

1I finally got the recipe to adjust when I went on my iPad; but if I want to use Greek yogurt , do I reduce the almond milk && how much “milk” & yogurt; how much protein power & vanilla extract, ALL for 1/2 the recipe.
TIA
Maya | Wholesome Yum
1Hi Pat, It depends how much Greek yogurt you want to add. For half the recipe, I’d start with adding 1/4 cup yogurt and reduce the amount of milk by 1/4 cup, then you can add more milk as needed to get the consistency you want. Vanilla can be to taste, I’d try 1/2 a teaspoon. 1-2 tablespoons of protein powder per serving would be a good amount. Hope this helps!

1This is so delicious! To me, it tastes like a strawberry milkshake but without the guilt or extra calories! Looking forward to making it again, especially in the coming hot summer months. Yum yum!
Kelli Denman
1Absolutely loved it! I added some Chia seeds…. and I halved the ingredients with alittle water. Is that okay?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Kelli, I have never made it that way but as long as you liked it then that’s all that matters!
Sarah Holsinger
0This was yummy and smooth. Great flavor. My kids said it was one of their new favorite smoothies.
Kasey
0I made this yesterday and it was delicious! Will be making again. So smooth and creamy!
Bob Fletcher
0This shake has 27g of carbs. It is not keto.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Bob, This recipe has 5.9g net carbs.
Linda
0Can you do this without the avacado?
Wholesome Yum D
1Hi Linda, Yes, you can skip the avocado.
evelyn
0really yummy smoothie recipe it is so healthy and tasty ?
Alex
0Wow, delicious! I only had sour cherries so that’s what I used. Did not need any sweetener though, it was fab as is. Definitely looking forward to diving into your other recipes since the first one I mad turned out to be a winner.
Shanon
0I’ve made this, and was wondering if you could use a “pinch” of sugar free jello powder to enhance flavor and omit unnecessary sweetness? And if so would lower carb count?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Shanon, I have never tried that but let me know the results if you do.
Jo deandrade
0Loving these low carb smoothie recipes! Thank you!
Melissa Mobley
0Very good!
LauraBear
0A simple recipe that delivers! I had a mix of frozen berries instead and enjoyed the smoothie without added sweetener. It tastes rich and creamy.
Carrie
0The avocado is actually good in there, was a bit skeptical. I used frozen diced avacado which made it harder to blend but its nice and thick. I didn’t have a scale to weigh the strawberries hope the macros come out ok. I have an entire blender full and its just me. Don’t know what to do other than try to freeze it in smaller portions.
Sue
0Love it! Especially with the additional ingredients.
Cheryl
0Tried this smoothie for an evening dessert… My husband and father said it was delicious! I used almond/coconut milk. Will definitely make it again!
J
0I happen to have all the ingredients on hand so I gave this a try. Omg! This was delicious!! Super thick and very yummy! This was my supper, so I added two tablespoons of whipped cream cheese. So for dinner I actually had strawberry cheesecake! LOL this recipe is a keeper! Thank you ?
Virginia
0Awesome taste.
Virginia
0Absolutely delicious

0?Maya~I’m so grateful that you re-posted this on youtube today! I forget how many delicious recipes you have, & this one is no exception~ thank you so much=) I think I might try it w/frozen blackberries & yogurt this time, maybe a little bit of lemon zest~ oh yum! *Also, a tip for storing in the freezer is to go ahead & put the extra into small jars w/lids~ it makes a great grab & go in the car because within a little while it defrosts to drinkable consistency~ just shake it a few times first. Can also eat w/a spoon, or store in those paper ice cream cups w/lids~ same easy grab & no messy scooping out of a larger container. Thanks again dear one~ Samantha in AZ
Pip
0I followed the recipe exactly but also added coconut water the thin the mix – fantastic 🙂
Kay
0Does the avocado make the smoothie turn dark?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Kay, No, it does not, as you can see from the pictures, the strawberry color overpowers it. Sometimes if your berries are less bright red, the smoothie can be a lighter pink, but still not dark.
Charlene Marie Tijerina
0Do you know how much Swerve I would add instead of the monk fruit? A 1/4 cup seems like a lot.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Charlene, I recommend using my Sweetener Conversion Chart to find out the correct amount of sweetener to use.
Clare Brown
0OMG, so delicious. I don’t do smoothies but this was so tasteful and filling. I hate sweetener, so didn’t add any into blender. It was still delicious and I’m hooked now. You don’t need sweetener in this smoothie as the strawberries add that sweetness anyway. Keep up the good work, from Scotland ?
Abby
0This was so good! And to the people that are not very nice with their posts, please think about how much hard work goes into this for food bloggers etc. Be kind in your criticisms. These are real people with real feelings reading what you say. Thank you Maya, I enjoy your recipes!
Dar
0So yummy! I hadn’t thought of putting avocado in a smoothie.
Big fan now!
Neo
0I can’t believe a smoothie so simple could be SO delicious. I was blown away by how the flavors balanced out. Yum!
Fokensheetman
0This recipe is a complete afterthought. It needs to be reexamined for the thought of 2 people, with actual measurements found in the kitchen. Having to google 2/5 lb and 3/10 cup is sloppy work.
Amy
0I’m not sure what recipe the person was reading who commented on weird measurements. I don’t see anything weird (2/5 lb???) The measurements were normal and perfect. Delicious!!
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Did you scale the recipe servings? Scaling can result in some unusual measurements, but otherwise it uses common measurements (1 pound, 1 1/2 cups, 1/4 cup, etc.) You should not need to Google anything.
Laura Kiesbye
0Question. If I change the serving size, does the nutrition change below to that size? I wish this was lower than 7g net. Not sure I can afford that many carbs on one meal. ? I’m guessing sugars are sugar alcohols and are deducted. Just trying to make sure I don’t overdo carbs today.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Laura, The sugar comes from the strawberries and would not be subtracted.
Julie Sale
0Just made this recipe this morning and to be completely honest, was a little skeptical. I am not a fan of avocados, especially paired with strawberries! I am here to admit, my skepticism was absolutely NOT warranted. Unlike the super sweet and calorie dense smoothies you find at most specialty shops, this smoothie is so crazy simple and absolutely delicious. The avocado actually makes it super thick and leaves no avocado-y taste! This will be a staple in my house!!! Thank you so much for the recipe!!
Amy L Huntley
0This is so yummy! It’s my new favorite recipe when I need something sweet. I love that it’s healthy too! My kids have been having it when I make it as well. This one is a keeper for sure!
Becky
0Great recipe! However… Why not photograph the actual recipe so ppl aren’t shocked or disapppointed when their recipe turns out murky ugly color which happens when avocado is added to smoothies. ?? Though since my 1st time adding avocado to a smoothie I have not looked back!!
How thick, creamy, whole food Wonderful to have all that fat in there!!! But color… That’s got to be sacrificed for yum factor!!!
But that pic is not accurate. Why?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Becky, I’m glad you like the recipe! The photo is the actual recipe, I made and photographed it myself. I never post fake photos. The color of the smoothie can vary a bit depending on how bright red your strawberries are.
Kristyn
0Quick, easy, & hardly any ingredients, make this my kind of smoothie!! Love strawberry & avocado!!
Swathi
0This low carb strawberry keto smoothie looks yum.
Sharron Diaz
0This has been my go-to smoothie! The whole family loves it!
Jaspaul
07g of net carbs a serving means that a single one of these smoothies takes up a good chunk of my daily carb intake without really giving me the fats that I would need to stay in ketosis. A little disappointing.
Beavis
0Took me 5 min of scrolling through a bunch of stuff I don’t need to know and wasn’t interested in finding the actual recipe. Just to find out that I don’t have all the ingredients! Put the recipe first, then tell your life story afterward. If people are interested in, what is almond milk.. which everyone should know by now they can read it.
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Beavis, There is a “jump to recipe” button right at the top of each page that will allow you to go right to the recipe.
Dara Cartee
0Hi Maya! I love your recipes so I can’t wait to try this one. I watched the video so I’m assuming this recipe makes 2-8oz servings? If that’s not correct, could you clarify?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Dara, This recipe makes 5 1-cup servings. I hope this helps!
Liz
07 g minus fiber..2 grams of carbs per serving
Patricia
0I love this recipe but I live alone. If I half the recipe, can I put the unused (1 serving) into the fridge or freezer to have the next day?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Patricia, Yes, that will work just fine!
Leslie R Ellins
0I love this recipe! So refreshing in the morning instead of my bullet proof coffee.
Maggie
0That calories is a joke. An avocado has 300 calories alone. Are you saying we’d only be drinking a small amount of it?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Maggie, This recipe makes 5 one-cup (8 oz) servings.
Reyna
0A little tangy, but tasty. I drank one cup as my first meal since I was not very hungry. I will probably make it more as a breakfast meal or as one of my snacks. Will definitely have my husband try it. Will be making it more often.
Valarie Evans
0Did you really mean a pound of strawberries?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Valerie, Yes this recipe calls for a pound of strawberries. Keep in mind it does make 5 servings.
Cheryl Stephen
0I use this smoothie when I work early morning shifts. I use this as a boost of energy to get me through to the end of my shift. My work day starts at 2:30 am.
I add a half of a scoop of Multi Collagen for added protein. I also divide smoothie into 3 1quart canning jars filling them up equally.
Tina
0I was skeptical about this smoothie recipe, but made it anyway. OMG!! It’s soooooo good! I used coconut milk and a little monk fruit sugar along with the avocado and strawberries. It was so decadent and tasty! This can work for breakfast or a “satisfy that sweet tooth” snack! Thank you so much!!
Cheryl Stephen
0I find most of the recpies easy to follow and make. I have made the chicken ranch and the egg roll casserole both came out great.
