GET IT NOWIf you’re anything like me and love the combo of chocolate and peanut butter together, this easy meal prep breakfast is for you. Remember those chocolate peanut butter smoothies I’m always raving about? Yeah, my peanut butter overnight oats are kind of like that, but in oat form. They’re practically on autopilot at my house, right along with my egg muffin cups. Make them with me to make your mornings so much easier!
Why You Need My Peanut Butter Overnight Oats Recipe

- Like dessert for breakfast – If you’re hooked on that chocolate peanut butter flavor, this is your new breakfast soulmate. It’s sweet and satisfying.
- 5-minute meal prep – Five minutes, a few pantry ingredients, and into the fridge it goes. No cooking required. Whip these up the night before, and you’ll have a no-fuss, healthy breakfast option in the morning.
- Healthy & kid friendly – As a mom always running out the door, I love having this peanut butter overnight oatmeal ready for my kids grab and go. Plus, it’s packed with fiber and healthy fats to power your day, and has no refined sugar.

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here I explain the best ingredients for peanut butter overnight oats, what each one does in my recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card.
- Rolled Oats – These create the best consistency for this recipe, but you can use quick oats if you want an extra soft texture. I don’t recommend using steel cut oats. A couple other considerations:
- Gluten – Oats are naturally gluten-free, but sometimes there’s cross-contamination. Look for labeled gluten-free oats if you’re sensitive.
- Carbs – If oats are too high in carbs for you, make my keto overnight oats instead.
- Chia Seeds – These little guys are not just for fiber, they actually thicken the oat mixture. Flaxseeds are a great substitute you need one.
- Peanut Butter – Obviously you need this for them to be peanut butter overnight oats! I like this brand with no sugar added for this recipe (and use the same kind for my healthy peanut butter cookies). Feel free to swap in another nut butter, or for a nut-free option, sunflower seed butter.
- Honey – I use my natural sugar-free honey to sweeten, but regular is fine. If you want a vegan sweetener, maple syrup (or my sugar free maple syrup) works just as well.
- Vanilla Extract – I love this brand.
- Chocolate Chips – I’m a fan of these sugar-free dark chocolate chips, but any kind will do. Feel free to leave them out if you want peanut butter overnight oats on their own without the chocolate part.
- Milk Of Choice – It’ll make the oats soft by morning. I use unsweetened almond milk for myself and whole milk for my girls. Coconut milk, hemp milk, or really any other milk works.
- Sea Salt – Just a pinch to balance the sweetness.

How To Make Peanut Butter Overnight Oats
I have step-by-step photos here to help you visualize the recipe. For full instructions with amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card.
- Combine everything except the milk. In a large bowl, combine the oats, chia seeds, peanut butter, honey, vanilla, chocolate chips, and salt.

- Divide and add the milk. Transfer the oatmeal mixture into 3 single serving containers, such as half-pint mason jars. Stir in the milk and cover with a lid or plastic wrap.
- Refrigerate. Chill the peanut butter oats overnight to thicken and allow the oats to absorb the liquid. If you like, top with more chocolate chips or an additional drizzle of peanut butter to serve.

My Recipe Tips
- Want to avoid an extra bowl to wash? You can make these peanut butter overnight oats directly in the cups or containers you’ll be storing them in. To do this, just set the servings to “1” on the recipe card below, and that will tell you how much of each ingredient to add to each serving.
- Want to change it up? You can easily customize this recipe with other add-ins. Sometimes I top it with fresh berries, sliced bananas, or a drizzle of sugar-free caramel syrup. You can also make a fall version by replacing half the milk with pumpkin puree, the honey with maple syrup, and add a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon.
- Prefer your oats warm? You can just pop the container in the microwave for 30-45 seconds in the morning.
- Want extra protein? Replace 1/2 to 1 cup of the milk with blended cottage cheese. I do this for my regular cooked protein oats, and love them so much. That’s saying a lot, as I’m not normally a cottage cheese fan. Trust me!
Storage & Meal Prep
This peanut butter overnight oatmeal is a meal prep champion. Just pop the containers in the refrigerator and you’re good to go! They’ll stay fresh and tasty for up to 5 days. As long as you use a non-dairy milk, you can also freeze them for up to 3 months.

Peanut Butter Overnight Oats

Gratitude Moment

I make my kids overnight oats for breakfast pretty often, because my husband takes them to school and I’m not always up early enough. (Night owl over here!) So, they grab their own breakfast, whether it’s these oats, healthy granola, or simply lox with some fresh veggies.
This week I made overnight oats and left them a note about it on the fridge. When I woke up, I discovered they wrote me back a thank-you note. Definitely an I-want-to-remember-this-forever moment!

1Hi can I leave out the chia seeds? I have diverticulitis so I can’t eat anything with seeds will it take away from the flavor?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
1Hi Debra, Yes, you can leave out the chia seeds, but the oats will be more runny.
Shawn
0Use ground flax instead
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Yes, that would work. I didn’t suggest it because it sounded like the reader can’t have seeds of any kind. Ground flax seed meal is made from seeds as well.
Diana
0Delicious. I used a sugar free honey and powdered peanut butter (mixed with water) to cut.
Wholesome Yum D
0Thanks for sharing, Diana! I’m so glad you enjoyed it.

0I’ve been making overnight oats for quite a while. I made this recipe without the chia seeds and reduced the milk to 1 1/2 cups. I also added some fresh raspberries right before eating it. Delicious!! It was like eating PB & J!!
Wholesome Yum D
0Mindy, that PB & J twist sounds so fun! Fresh raspberries with the peanut butter combo must have been delicious. Thanks for sharing your spin on it!

0We have made this multiple times and love it! I have changed it up by decreasing the amount of honey and using some mashed bananas instead (peanut butter banana chocolate chip, yum!). Definitely a hit with my kids. It’s easy to put together the night before and then have ready to serve up for breakfast, making our morning breakfasts easy and quick. I usually just make a big bowl of it to keep in the fridge and put on plates with a piece of breakfast casserole.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I’m so happy you and your kids love it, Kathryn! Thank you for sharing your variation. Great idea to serve it with a breakfast casserole, too.
Sheri Earle
0Absolutely love these. Never thought I’d be a fan of cold oats, but was looking for some different breakfast ideas that could be prepped ahead of time. Prepared these as per the recipe and they are great. Have also tried several variations now and they’ve been good as well. I love the versatility of these little gems!!
Wholesome Yum D
0I’m so happy you loved them, Sheri! Overnight oats really are so versatile, and it’s great you were able to make them your own.

DeAnn
0These oats are delicious. I have made them 3 times and they always taste so good. I did crack one of the jars when I heated them up in the microwave. So now I pour them into a bowl to heat them. Does anyone eat them cold? I hated oatmeal as a child but I love this recipe.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I’m happy you liked them, DeAnn! I do eat them cold, but yes, you can heat them in a bowl if you like.
Amy
0I guess I don’t understand a breakfast recipe that only has 9g of protein. That would not satiate me at all.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Amy, You’re welcome to add protein powder if you’d like more protein in your overnight oats.
John
0I made these last week and are now my favourite breakfast option. Although I did find them a little too sweet, I’ll reduce the syrup next batch.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0I’m glad you liked these, John! Yes, feel free to adjust the sweetness to your taste next time.
Sue V
0Yum! This is the first recipe I tried with Wholesome Yum Zero Sugar Honey. (I did reduce the amount of honey since I wanted to cut down on the sweetness). I think this recipe tastes best warmed in the microwave.
Connie Sera

Michelle
0This is an awesome recipe I’m a diabetic so are you sugar free everything this is perfect for a quick breakfast and also very filling thank you so much
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Thank you, Michelle! Yes, all my recipes are refined sugar free. Some of them do have natural sugars from fruit. I always list nutrition info on the recipe card so that you can see the sugar content. Hope this helps!
Patricia j Brown
0I haven’t made this yet, but since I do not care for chia seeds, I am using nuts instead. It sounds delicious, and I will make it for tomorrow. MMM.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Patricia, Nuts won’t thicken the same way chia seeds do, but if you don’t mind your oats more runny, feel free to make that swap.
Karen
0Question, would you recommend trying peanut butter powder in this recipe?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Karen, I have not made this recipe with pb powder. It would probably work if you reconstitute it with water first. Let me know how it goes if you try it!
Patricia DeMuth
0I am just wondering how are oats keto, there’s alot of carbs in this recipe. I am new to this keto thing and only allowed 30gr of carbs.I love peanut butter and chia and would love to try this but why so many carbs??
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Patricia, This is not a keto recipe.
Esther
0Substitutes for oats?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Esther, Oats are the main ingredient in this recipe, so I don’t have a substitute for them, sorry.
Victor L
0These ONO are absolutely delicious. I will admit I was skeptical about ONO but reading the ingredients I had to give it a try. I am a sucker for peanut peanut butter anything. These are so easy to make I make three servings so I can switch up breakfast during the week and not get burnt out eating the same thing every morning. Add this recipe to your weekly meal prep I promise you won’t be disappointed.
Linda
0Won’t the oatmeal be raw? I don’t see how the oatmeal is cooked in this recipe?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Linda, The oatmeal doesn’t need to be cooked. It softens from sitting in the milk overnight.
Maricela
0this is not the recipe on facebook where you use hemp hearts, this is very high in carbs…….where can I find the one for Keto recipes???
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Maricela, Here is the recipe for keto overnight oats.
Ethne
0Are oats Keto? Wouldn’t have thought so!
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Ethne, These are not keto. You can find the nutrition facts under the recipe.
Susan S.
0Should this be heated in the morning or eaten cold? Thanks.
Jessica S
0Has anyone used with PB2 instead of peanut butter? Thoughts?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Jessica, I have never tried that, but please let me know the results if you do.
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Susan, You could do either. It’s up to you.
Susan S.
0Thank you!

Wholesome Yum D
